Culture and maternal
soothing of infant pain.
I
will illustrate a model for the study of the issue, some empirical findings
showing the impact of eco-culture on infant pain reactivity and infant
contextual sensitivity to pediatric routine. I will show in which ways
mothers may impact upon babies' pain reactivity and discuss pilot data
on differences between American and Italian mothers and infants observed
during inoculations in early infancy. I will show number of slides
of Renaissance paintings to make my point about cultural differences
in maternal behavior to infants. They are apparent in ancient Italian,
Dutch and German art, going back 600 years ago.
